Devilbiss PLUS High Efficiency Gravity Feed GFG670 Review

by Charles Ritchie February 4, 2020
by Charles Ritchie

Devilbiss is one of the best paint sprayer brands that both DIY-ers and professionals turn to for high quality results. This particular product, the Devilbiss GFG670 PLUS is not specifically an automotive spray gun but rather a fantastic general purpose finisher.

Although it is not recommended for spraying plasti dip, it does have exceptional atomization and sprays paint much more efficiently than a HVLP. Using a spray gun like this gives you a very smooth result while wasting less paint material on overspray.

3 Tips included, One for Every Layer

Devilbiss PLUS High Efficiency GFG670The package includes 3 different tip sizes. The 1.2 mm and 1.3 mm tips are best for base coats, single stages and high solids clear coats while at a greater pressure the 1.4 mm tip works best, especially for low solids clear coats.

This machine is most popular for a high gloss finish and of the disadvantages of high gloss versus a matte finish is that it shows the mistakes and surface imperfections more clearly. Having these 3 tip sizes available cuts out the first possible mistake; using the same universal tip for each layer.

Reusing a paint sprayer tip causes contamination of the different paint materials. Basically, the remains of the previous paint type are likely still stuck in the tip so, when you spray the new layer you might get drips of a different material which will show on the final result.

Changing the spray tip is a piece of advice every new user of spray guns should know. Plus, being 3 different sizes, each of these tips has their own compatibility with a specific paint type – in other words, a cleaner and smoother finish.

Better than Its HVLP Competition

Many reviewers were impressed by the performance of the Devilbiss GFG670 PLUS since it has a 20% larger paint pattern and 15% faster fluid flow than standard High Efficiency Gravity feed guns. At the same time, it also has a smaller overspray meaning that the transfer rate is improved, one of the benefits of a gravity feed design.

It atomizes well when using the right size compressor to keep it at the most suitable internal pressure. Most impressively, it doubles the atomization of a standard HVLP spray gun.

Overall, customers and expert reviewers are very satisfied with the Devilbiss GFG670 PLUS. It is a solid choice for professionals and the local handymen that frequently have to perform precision paint jobs.

The piece has an ergonomic handle which is much appreciated when working for long hours. It is also extremely lightweight at only 1.5 pounds so you won’t reach the fatigue point at just a few minutes in.

Maintenance and Durability

Devilbiss PLUS High Efficiency Gravity FeedPutting the Devilbiss GFG670 PLUS together and doing routine cleaning and maintenance is relatively simple compared to many other models, even the more expensive types. This is due to its design and main material which is aluminium.

Both the fluid passageway and fluid cup are made with aluminium which speaks to its durability. Aluminium is the best paint sprayer material because it does not corrode while also being a lightweight low maintenance material.

The included tips and needle are stainless which is another non-corrosive low maintenance material. Stainless steel is a tougher material too and so it makes sense that the tip and needle are made using this material – it is built to withstand the pressure.

The Disadvantages

Devilbiss PLUS High Efficiency Gravity Feed GFG670Although this unit is compatible with smaller compressors, don’t set it too low either. That will undermine its mechanics and give poorer results.

Also, it is not compatible with as many paint materials as an HVLP so this is not a start to finish paint sprayer. It is best suited for base coats and clear coats.

Verdict

Devilbiss spray gunOverall, this is an excellent High Efficiency Gravity Feed spray gun that delivers amazing results with ease. Devilbiss gave this model a few tweaks, the fluid flow and larger paint pattern, that set it apart from its competition in the same category.

These same tweaks also minimizes the disadvantages this type of spray gun has compared to an HVLP. The Devilbiss GFG670 PLUS outperforms any HVLP and is the natural choice for a professional.

That being said, DIY-ers can expect excellent results with a little practice. It is a long lasting piece with good atomization and an user-friendly design that is intuitive even for newbies.
